A recent study reveals that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
